Cervical Cancer Screening

With regular screening tests and follow-up, cervical cancer is actually the easiest gynecologic form of cancer to prevent. Two screening tests – performed by our female gynecologist Dr. Rania Ibrahim – can help prevent cervical cancer or detect it early on.

Two types of tests are performed for cervical cancer screening:

  1. The Pap test (or smear) searches for cell changes on the cervix that might evolve into cervical cancer if they are not treated correctly.
  2. The HPV test searches for the human papillomavirus virus (HPV) that can trigger these cell changes.

The Pap smear is recommended for all women who are between the ages of 21 and 65 years old, and is typically performed in your OB-GYN’s office.

During the test, our female gynecologist will expand your vagina using a plastic or metal instrument, allowing her to examine the vagina and the cervix, and collect samples of cells and mucus from the area. The cells are then sent to a laboratory for testing.

At this time your OB-GYN may also suggest a pelvic exam to inspect your ovaries, uterus and other organs to verify there are no existing concerns.

If you are between the ages of 21 and 65 years old, it’s important for you to continue getting a Pap smear even if you think you are too old to get pregnant or are no longer engaging in sex. If you are over the age of 65 and have had normal Pap test results for a number of years, or if you have had your cervix removed as part of a hysterectomy, your doctor may tell you that you can discontinue your Pap testing.
