Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Vaccine
The HPV vaccine is administered to prevent infection with the most harmful kinds of human papillomavirus (also called HPV). According to New Beginning’s OB-GYN Dr. Rania Ibrahim, an HPV vaccine is safe, effective, and can guard against most of the cancers caused by HPV and genital warts.
There are in excess of 40 types of HPV that can infect the genital areas of men and women. Certain types can also infect the mouth and throat and the majority of people who are infected with HPV don’t ever realize that they have contracted it.
HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the country. In fact, it is so widespread that nearly all men and women who are sexually active will contract it at some point in their lives. And most of these people will never know that they’ve been infected and unknowingly pass it on to a partner.
People typically contract HPV during vaginal and/or anal sex. A person can contract HPV even if their partner (whether straight or same-sex) doesn’t have any signs or symptoms of an HPV infection. A person can still have it even if years have passed since he or she had sexual contact with an infected person.
All children should get the three-dose series of the HPV vaccine when they reach the age of 11 or 12. The vaccine is also recommended for any young man who has sex with men and for young men who have a damaged immune system (including HIV) through age 26, if they did not receive the HPV vaccine when they were younger.
