Laparoscopic Bilateral Tubal Ligation
A tubal ligation is performed as a permanent method of birth control. During the procedure, the patient’s fallopian tubes are blocked or cut to obstruct the egg’s journey to the sperm and uterus. Laparoscopy allows your OB-GYN to perform the surgery through small incisions made in the abdomen.
During a laparoscopic tubal ligation, your Ob-GYN will make two small cuts – one near the navel and the other near the upper edge of the patient’s pubic hair. The abdominal cavity is then inflated with air or gas to enable your OB-GYN to see abdominal organs or the inside of the abdomen without causing any damage.
The surgeon then inserts a thin, lighted laparoscope through the incision for viewing. The instrument that the OB-GYN uses to cut the tubes is typically inserted either beside the laparoscope or through the incision located just above the pubic hair. The OB-GYN looks through the laparoscope while moving this tool to ensure that the tubes are cut in the proper location.
Laparoscopic tubal ligation leaves small scars, and is the preferred method of surgery for women who:
- Are healthy;
- Maintain the proper weight;
- Do not possess abnormalities of the pelvic organs;
- Have never had to undergo abdominal or pelvic surgery
- Have never had an infection of the pelvic organs;
- Are not suffering from endometriosis;
- Have not recently given birth.
Immediately following the surgery, you will be moved to a recovery area where your recovery will be observed by the nursing staff. This stay in the recovery area typically lasts for about 1 to 4 hours, and then you will be free to go home. In addition to any special instructions from your OB-GYN, your nurse will provide information regarding your recovery.
