During an abdominal hysterectomy, your OB-GYN will detach your uterus from your ovaries, fallopian tubes and upper vagina, as well as from the supporting blood vessels and connective tissue.
The lower part of your uterus – which is called the cervix – is typically removed during a total hysterectomy, but at times may remain in place if the patient opts for a partial hysterectomy. If necessary, your OB-GYN may remove additional reproductive organs and tissue, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes.
Before surgery, your OB-GYN may perform screening tests for cancer, which could alter her approach to your surgery. These screening tests can include:
- A Pap test to detect any abnormal cervical cells or cancer of the cervix;
- An endometrial biopsy to identify abnormal cells in the uterine lining or the presence of endometrial cancer;
- A pelvic ultrasound to determine the location and size of uterine fibroids, endometrial polyps or ovarian cysts.
During the procedure, your OB-GYN will make either a horizontal or vertical 5-inch to 7-inch incision in the lower part of your stomach to allow for removal of the organs.
