A laparoscopic hysterectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed to remove the uterus. Your OB-GYN, Dr. Rania Ibrhahim, inserts a small camera into a small incision in the navel and then watches the image from the camera on a TV screen to perform the surgery.
Two or three other small incisions are also made in the lower abdomen and specially designed instruments that are to be used for the uterus removal process are inserted through them.
Not all women have their ovaries removed when they undergo a hysterectomy, and if the ovaries remain, the woman won’t need to take any hormones following the surgery and she won’t experience hot flashes. Some women opt to have their ovaries removed because of a family history of ovarian cancer or because there is an abnormal growth on their ovary.
Women who have a hysterectomy can choose to either let the cervix remain in place or remove it along with the entire uterus. Keeping the cervix in place results in a faster and safer operation. With the cervix in place there is a 5% chance that the patient will experience monthly spotting. If a woman chooses to keep her cervix, she will need to continue getting regular pap smears.
If the patient wants to be completely sure that she will never have a menstrual period again, she needs to have the entire uterus removed with a total hysterectomy. If she has an existing history of pre-cancerous changes of the cervix or uterine lining, she should opt for complete removal of the uterus. If the operation is being performed for the treatment of endometriosis or pelvic pain, the chances for pain reduction are better if the cervix is removed.
