Urinary Incontinence

Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence affects over 25 million Americans, mostly women, and occurs when you urinate accidentally. Dr. Rania Ibrahim advises that there are several variations of urinary incontinence as shown below.

Stress Incontinence results from a spike in abdominal pressure that occurs when you exercise, sneeze, laugh, or cough. Urine slips out because pelvic floor muscles and tissues have weakened.

Urge Incontinence. Urge incontinence is also called overactive bladder (OAB), and it creates a need to go to the bathroom so urgent that you may not get there in time and leak urine.

Overflow Incontinence. You may be experiencing overflow incontinence if you’re unable to empty your bladder properly, and as a result, you experience leakage when the bladder is already full.

Functional Incontinence. If you suffer from functional incontinence, it’s usually because physical conditions such as arthritis, or mental issues such as dementia prevent you from getting to the bathroom in time.

Treatment Options for Urinary Incontinence

Depending on the type of urinary incontinence you are living with, certain changes in lifestyle can lessen the effects of the condition.

Some options for the treatment of urinary incontinence include:

  • Pelvic floor (Kegel) exercises;
  • Biofeedback, which takes information about something occurring in your body and presenting it in a way that you can understand.
  • Devices, such as a pessary, vaginal cone, urethral insert and external urethral barrier;
  • Injections and/or surgery;
  • Scheduled emptying and bladder training;
  • Medications or surgery.

Urinary incontinence can be embarrassing to discuss, but overcoming your reluctance is worth it, as treatment can reduce or eliminate the problem.
