Colposcopy

A colposcopy is a procedure performed Dr. Rania Ibrahim to closely examine the vagina, vulva and cervix of her female patients for signs of disease using a special instrument known as a colposcope.

This test may be recommended in the event that a Pap test or pelvic exam reveals any concerns. It is typically used for the diagnosis of:

  • Cancer of the cervix;
  • Genital warts;
  • Swelling of the cervix;
  • Precancerous changes in the tissue of the cervix, vagina or vulva;
  • Vaginal cancer.

Typically performed in your ObGyn’s office, a colposcopy normally takes only approximately 10 to 20 minutes to complete. With the patient lying on her back and her feet in supports, your ObGyn inserts a speculum into the vagina to hold open its walls, giving her a clear assessment of the cervix.

The cervix and vagina are then cleaned with cotton to remove any mucus. Your ObGyn may also apply a vinegar mix to the area to help uncover any cells that may cause concern. This solution can cause a mild burning or tingling sensation.

If your ObGyn then locates anything that appears suspicious, she will collect a small tissue sample – using a sharp biopsy tool – for further testing.

Following your colposcopy, you may have some light vaginal bleeding for a day or two. The outcome of your tests will determine if you’ll need any further testing.
