Gynecology Q & A

What is gynecology?

Gynecology includes medical evaluation and treatment to help you maintain exceptional women’s reproductive health. Seeing a gynecologist annually, or more often if you experience unusual bleeding, pelvic pain, or other concerning symptoms, helps your provider detect gynecological problems and treat them early before they become serious.

What conditions do gynecologists treat?

Gynecology specialists at New Beginnings OB/GYN diagnose and treat the following common gynecological problems in women:

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Endometriosis
  • Fibroids
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Infertility
  • Menopause symptoms
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Abnormal pap smears or cervical dysplasia

Common symptoms of menopause include difficulty sleeping, hot flashes, mood swings, and vaginal dryness, as well as reduced sexual desire, weight gain, and thinning hair.

Early detection and treatment for many of these conditions or their underlying causes gives you the best outcome.

What happens during gynecology visits?

During gynecology appointments at New Beginnings OB/GYN, friendly providers greet you and complete the following:

Vital signs check

Your OB/GYN weighs you, assesses your body mass index (BMI), and evaluates your pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs.

Medical history review

Your provider discusses your symptoms, medication regimen, and personal or family history of diseases during a medical history review.

Physical exam

During a physical exam, your specialist evaluates your breathing, heartbeat, eyes, ears, throat, and more. They offer breast exams to screen for signs of breast cancer and pelvic exams to evaluate your reproductive organs, including pelvic organ prolapse. Your provider also uses a Pap test to screen for signs of cervical cancer.

Diagnostic testing

In addition to Pap tests, your OB/GYN specialist could recommend other diagnostic procedures. Examples include urine tests, blood tests, an ultrasound, hysteroscopy, biopsies, or other tests that help them diagnose possible gynecological problems.

If your pap smear shows cervical dysplasia, or the presence of high-risk Human Papilloma virus (HPV), your gynecologist will recommend a colposcopy and cervical biopsy to rule out pre cancerous lesions or cancer.  If the cervical biopsy confirms the presence of pre-cancerous or cancerous lesions, your OB/GYN will recommend a Loop Electrocautery Excisional Procedure or LEEP.

STD testing

If you notice changes in your vaginal health, you may want to schedule STD testing right away. Common symptoms of an STD are pelvic pain, unusual itching, pain during sex or when urinating. It’s important to understand that many STDs do not present any symptoms, which is why screening is the only way to know for sure if you have an infection.

Treatment

If you need treatment for a women’s health concern, your New Beginnings OB/GYN specialist tailors the best plan for you.

They offer health education, medication prescriptions, vaccinations, birth control, and infertility treatment, as well as hormone replacement therapy, further diagnostic testing, surgery, and more. The New Beginnings OB/GYN specialists use the latest advances in technologies and procedures.
