Da Vinci Robotic Surgery Q & A

What is the da Vinci robotic surgery system?

The da Vinci robotic surgery system is among the most advanced robotic surgery systems. A form of minimally invasive surgery, the da Vinci system offers several advantages over traditional open surgical techniques.

Robotic surgery is performed using only a few small incisions. The tools used in these procedures are also incredibly small, allowing the targeted tissue to be altered or removed without displacing a significant amount of surrounding tissue.

Smaller incisions and less tissue displacement mean faster recovery times, less scarring, and minimal bleeding during procedures. Because these procedures can be done faster than traditional open surgery, less time is spent under anesthesia, and a lower risk of infection.

What kinds of gynecologic conditions can the da Vinci robotic surgery platform treat?

The da Vinci robotic surgery system can treat numerous common gynecologic conditions. Some of the procedures that can be performed using this approach include:

  • Hysterectomy
  • Removal of uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis treatment
  • Repair of pelvic organ prolapse

There are some circumstances where traditional open surgery is a better treatment option. During your consultation, you’ll learn the details of all available treatment paths, empowering you to make an informed decision about your care.

At New Beginnings OB/GYN, you are encouraged to actively shape your own health and wellness journey. Feel free to ask questions, express concerns, and learn more about what to expect before and after your procedure.

Is robotic surgery safe?

Many people are initially uncomfortable with the concept of robotic surgery. However, when you look more closely at the process, it’s easy to see why so many practitioners prefer this approach.

The da Vinci robotic surgery system consists of three components that work together during procedures. Your gynecologist is seated at the surgeon console, which is equipped with high-definition imaging to allow her to “see” real-time imaging of your internal tissues. Your surgeon controls the entire surgery from this position.

A patient cart is positioned next to your treatment bed. This cart is equipped with the robotic surgical arms and the tools needed to alter your tissues. Your surgeon’s hand movements control the movements of the robotic arms, which can achieve a degree of precision and flexibility that even the most skilled human hand could never replicate.

A vision cart works to communicate between the surgeon console and patient cart. It also provides a screen where the surgical team can view all steps of the procedure.
