Evaluation and Treatment of Infertility

INFERTILITY TREATMENT AND ULTRASOUND

An ultrasound is a common diagnostic test used by your OB-GYN for a variety of conditions. If a patient is involved with infertility testing or therapy, they will likely have a number of ultrasounds over the course of their treatment.

Though an ultrasound can seem intimidating, it’s actually a fast and painless way to learn more about your reproductive health.

An ultrasound – which is similar to an x-ray – allows your OB-GYN to examine parts of your body that are not visible to the naked eye. It is typically used to get a closer look at the patient’s abdomen and/or chest areas, to provide a clearer unobstructed view of your vital organs.

An ultrasound of the pelvic region is also used to get a better view of your reproductive organs. This type of ultrasound is commonly performed to aid with infertility testing and fertility treatments.

Ultrasounds use high frequency sound waves to create images, which are then sent to a television monitor for viewing. The ultrasound machine produces sounds, which are absorbed through a probe or transducer.

While there are a few different types of ultrasounds performed by your OB-GYN, abdominal ultrasound and transvaginal ultrasound are the two most commonly utilized during infertility treatments.

Abdominal Ultrasound: For women who are suffering with problems related to infertility, an abdominal ultrasound can reveal if you may have fibroids, cysts, endometriosis or PCOS, while determining the general health of your reproductive system.

Transvaginal Ultrasound: This type of ultrasound is normally used during a fertility review to assess the health of your cervix, fallopian tubes and ovaries. If you are undergoing IVF/IUI procedures, or are receiving fertility drugs, a transvaginal ultrasound may also be performed.

Ultrasound During Treatment: Many infertility treatments and procedures use ultrasound to monitor growth rate of the follicles, ascertain when certain procedures (such as retrieval) should be performed, and to guide your OB-GYN during egg retrieval for IVF.
