Infertility

According to Dr. Rania Ibrahim, the main symptom of infertility is a couple’s inability to conceive. A menstrual cycle that lasts for 35 days or more, less than 21 days, is irregular or absent altogether can be a sign that the patient is not ovulating, which is typically associated with female infertility. There typically are no other outward signs or symptoms.

When to seek help from your OB-GYN depends somewhat on your age for the following reasons:

  • If you’re in your early 30s or younger, most OB-GYNs suggest trying to conceive for at least one year before having any tests performed.
  • If you’re between the ages of 35 and 40, discuss your concerns with your OB-GYN after you have been trying to conceive for about six months.
  • If you’re over the age of 40, your OB-GYN may recommend beginning testing and/or treatment right away.

Your OB-GYN also may want to begin testing immediately if you or your partner has any diagnosed fertility problems, or if you have a background of irregular or painful periods, pelvic inflammatory disease, multiple miscarriages, previous cancer treatments or endometriosis.

Certain factors that may place you at higher risk of infertility include:

Age: As a woman ages, the quality and number of her eggs begin to decrease.

Smoking: Not only can smoking damage your cervix and fallopian tubes, it also increases your risk of miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy.

Weight: If you’re significantly overweight or underweight, it may hinder normal ovulation.

Sexual history: Sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia and gonorrhea can damage the fallopian tubes.

Alcohol: Excessive drinking is connected with an increased risk of ovulation disorders and endometriosis.
