What to Know and Prepare for Mona Lisa Touch Treatment

When you hear the name Mona Lisa, naturally, images of the famous Leonardo da Vinci painting come to mind. However, there’s a new Mona Lisa in town. It’s called MonaLisa Touch, a laser device product for your vagina. Read further if you’re interested to know more about the MonaLisa treatment from an ob-gyn doctor in The Woodlands area.

What is MonaLisa Touch For?

MonaLisa Touch is a treatment for vaginal atrophy. Many women experience vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA), or the more common, dry vagina. VVA is most common in women who are post-menopausal, have experienced breast cancer, or had a hysterectomy. If you suffer from VVA, know you are not alone, as it is estimated that nearly 50 percent of postmenopausal women struggle with it.

How Does MonaLisa Touch Work?

Administered by an ob-gyn specialist, the treatment uses a fractional CO2 laser to produce small laser pulses in a particular area of the vagina. This laser begins to stimulate and heal the tissue, forming new blood vessels, elastin, and collagen. This treats vaginal atrophy by restoring metabolic activity similar to a pre-menopausal state. This is achieved with a synthesis of hyaluronic acid, collagen, proteoglycans, and glycosaminoglycans. Research has shown this makes for a restored and hydrated mucosa that operates like young and healthy tissue, with resilience and elasticity, that is less irritating or prone to trauma.

What to Know and How to Prepare

Patients are advised not to use lubes or similar products for at least 3 days before the getting the procedure. Since MonaLisa Touch is virtually painless, you don’t need to worry about the need for painkiller medications. To begin with, a small vaginal probe is inserted into the vagina. As the probe retracts in 1-centimeter increments, the laser is activated. The entire process takes somewhere around 3 to 5 minutes. After MonaLisa Touch is complete, the post-procedure recovery is brief. For the next 2 to 3 days, it is advised to refrain from hot baths or unusually strenuous activities. In rare occasions, a slight discharge could result as part of the healing process.
