Gonorrhea / Chlamydia Infections

Gonorrhea and chlamydia are two sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), which can lead to serious, long-term problems if not treated, especially in young women and teenagers.

According to Dr. Rania Ibrahim, both gonorrhea and chlamydia are caused by bacteria, which can be passed from one person to another via vaginal, oral or anal sex. Gonorrhea and chlamydia often affect a woman simultaneously.

Gonorrhea / Chlamydia Infections

The infections from gonorrhea and chlamydia can appear in the mouth, reproductive organs, rectum and urethra. In women, the most common place the infections are found is the cervix, which is the opening of the uterus.

Although gonorrhea and chlamydia can strike at any age, women who are 25 years and younger are at a greater risk of contracting both infections. That is why it is so important to make sure you get an STD check by making an appointment at New Beginnings OB GYN.

What symptoms are associated with gonorrhea and chlamydia?

Women with gonorrhea or chlamydia typically exhibit no symptoms, but when they do appear, they can show up anywhere from 2 days to 3 weeks after the infection has set in. They may be very mild and are often mistaken for a urinary tract or vaginal infection.

The most common symptoms of gonorrhea and chlamydia in women include the following:

  • A yellow discharge from the vagina;
  • Frequent or painful urination;
  • Vaginal bleeding in between menstrual periods;
  • Rectal bleeding, discharge, or pain.

To find out if you are suffering from gonorrhea or chlamydia, your OB-GYN will take a sample of cells from your throat, cervix, urethra, or rectum. These infections can also be revealed through a urine test.
