Herpes Infection

A herpes infection is a result of the herpes simplex virus (HSV) and is one of the most widespread sexually transmitted diseases in the country. Because it produces either no symptoms or very mild ones, most people who have genital herpes don’t realize it.

While you can still pass the infection to others, you may never notice any symptoms from a herpes infection. On the other hand, you might notice symptoms anywhere from three days to two weeks after the initial contact. In some cases the symptoms don’t appear for months or even years after becoming infected.

Herpes Infection

When symptoms occur shortly after a person is infected, they are typically quite severe. Starting as small blisters that ultimately break open and produce raw blisters, they can lead to painful sores that scab and heal over a period of a few weeks. The blisters and sores associated with a herpes infection can be accompanied by flu-like symptoms, including fever and swollen lymph nodes.

Following are some of the more common symptoms of a herpes infection:

  • Cracked, raw, or red areas around your vagina;
  • Itching or tingling in and around your anal area;
  • Small blisters that break open and cause painful sores on or around your vagina, buttocks, thighs, or rectal area.
  • Painful, burning urination;
  • Headaches and/or backaches.

Genital herpes is not the only disorder that produces these symptoms. Often a herpes infection is mistakenly thought to be a yeast infection, bacterial infection or bladder infection. The only way to determine if your symptoms are the result of a herpes infection is to be tested by your OB-GYN, who will perform a physical exam and then confirm the results with a swab test or a blood test.
