Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) is a way to test and treat abnormal cell growth on the tissue found on the surface of the cervix. LEEP is typically recommended by Dr. Rania Ibrahim after confirmation of abnormal changes in the cervix. These changes are usually confirmed by administering Pap tests and colposcopy biopsies.
LEEP allows your OB-GYN to take out the abnormal tissue and test it further for the presence of cancer.
Abnormal cell growth on the surface of the cervix is referred to as cervical dysplasia and though it is not considered to be a form of cancer, it can eventually get worse and lead to cancer.
How is Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure Performed?
LEEP is similar to a standard pelvic exam, in that you will remain awake during the procedure and experience only minor discomfort. A speculum will be inserted into the vagina and opened so that the cervix can be examined.
A solution is applied to the cervix to make the abnormal cells detectable to your Ob-Gyn. She then places a colposcope near the opening of your vagina that will provide an enlarged view of your cervix.
After numbing the cervix with a with local anesthesia, an electric loop made of thin wire will be inserted through the speculum and up into to the cervix.
As the loop travels across the cervix, it cuts away a thin layer of surface tissue to remove the abnormal cells. This tissue can then be tested for cancer or abnormal cells. As a final step, a medicated cream is applied to the area to stop any bleeding.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure takes just 10 to 20 minutes and you will be able to return home as soon as the treatment has been completed.
Is LEEP procedure safe?
LEEP is very safe. In fact, complications are quite uncommon and the procedure can be completed without the use of a general anesthesia. Discuss any anxieties you may have about the procedure with your OB-GYN.
During your recovery, you may have light vaginal bleeding and mild cramping; for relief of the cramping, take a non-aspirin, over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen.
