Cord Blood Banking
Cord blood banking is the process used by Dr. Rania Ibrahim for collecting blood that remains in your newborn’s umbilical cord and placenta and storing it for use in the future. The blood in the umbilical cord contains potentially lifesaving cells called stem cells.
Once collected, the cord blood can be donated to a public cord blood bank for anyone who needs it or you can store it in your family cord blood bank for future use by a family member.
How is the cord blood collected and banked?
The cord blood collection process is painless and safe for you and your baby and is performed immediately after giving birth. Following are the three easy steps involved in collecting the cord blood.
- The cord is clamped and cut.
- A needle is placed into the umbilical vein on the part of the cord that’s still attached to the placenta and the blood is drained into a collection bag by your OB-GYN.
- The cord blood is shipped to a cord blood bank and – if determined to be acceptable for future medical use – will be placed into long-term storage.
Because the cord tissue contains stem cells that differ from the cord blood stem cells, some cord blood banks are now providing the option to collect a piece of the umbilical cord along with the cord blood.
Cord blood stem cells have been used to treat many different diseases, including blood disorders, some cancers and immune deficiencies.
