Transvaginal (which means across or through the vagina) ultrasound is a test used by OB-GYN Montgomery County Dr. Rania Ibrahim to view her patients’ reproductive organs, including the cervix, uterus and ovaries.
Preparation for the exam is similar to a standard Pap test or pelvic exam. A few simple steps are followed:
- A probe covered with a condom and gel is inserted into the vagina.
- The probe sends out sound waves – which reflect off the body parts – to a computer, which uses them to create a picture for your OB-GYN to view on a TV monitor.
- The OB-GYN moves the probe around the area to view the pelvic organs.
In some cases, a special transvaginal ultrasound method called saline infusion sonography may be used for a clearer view of the uterus.
The test is painless, although some women may experience mild discomfort from the pressure of the small part of the probe that is inserted into the vagina.
Transvaginal ultrasound can reveal the following conditions:
- Cysts, fibroid tumors, or other growths;
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding and problems with menstruation;
- Some types of infertility;
- Ectopic pregnancies;
- Pelvic pain.
There are no known harmful effects of transvaginal ultrasound on humans and they can be performed on pregnant women.
